Congratulations to the Fall 2024 Recipients of TYDE Funding
Afsaneh Doryab (Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Systems and Information Engineering) will begin a multi-phase project that aims to improve UVA undergraduates’ health and well-being by encouraging engagement in physical activities together using a smart mobile app.
Brent Kitchens (Associate Professor of Commerce) focuses on how social media and other online platforms influence information consumption behaviors, including the quality, diversity, and polarization of information users consume. Kitchens received mentorship funding to create a two-year postdoc position to advance research related to online information quality and its impact on young adult mental health.
Stefanie Sequeira (Assistant Professor of Psychology) will refine and test self-reporting measures among youth (ages 11-21) to better understand the impacts of social media experiences on their mental health.
Lana Swartz (Associate Professor of Media Studies) will explore the financial well-being of young people, what practices and tools they use—particularly social technologies–and whether they help or hinder in this process. Swartz also received mentorship funding to create a two-year postdoc position to participate in her research.
Ashleigh Wade (Associate Professor of Media Studies) plans to develop a non-profit social media platform for Black youth that optimizes the connectivity and creativity of existing popular social media platforms while mitigating the deleterious effects that these profit-based social media applications can have on children and young adults.
Noah French (Ph.D. Candidate, Psychology) received a graduate student grant to study the impacts of stressors on physiology and emotion among sexual and gender minority (SGM) emerging adults.
Cai Liu (Ph.D. student, Psychology) received a graduate student grant to explore the impactful role of digital communication when it comes to young adults and their college transitions, particularly those of cultural minorities.
