Advancing Research on Youth Mental Health and Digital Technology
Access to social media and digital technology has transformed the experience of childhood and adolescence around the world. At the same time, there is an alarming rise in rates of mental and behavioral health difficulties among young people. Public health authorities argue that there is a causal relationship between these two dynamics–yet despite widespread concern, the reality is that there is little rigorous research on the precise dynamics of youth technology use. TYDE meets this public health challenge by mobilizing and expanding significant research expertise across UVA to address the youth mental health crisis and understand its relationship to technology.
The initiative fosters a nuanced approach to youth and technology—one that distinguishes between circumstances when tech is harmful, when it can support well-being, and when it is merely another context of normal youth development. TYDE sponsors innovative interdisciplinary research collaboratives that will deepen academic and public understandings of the complex relationship between youth mental health and digital technology. It also builds relationships with industry partners to development technology with the potential to expand access to urgent mental health interventions for young people who need it most.
UVA’s Grand Challenge
Thriving Youth in a Digital Environment (TYDE) is a pan-university research initiative supported by UVA’s Grand Challenge Research Investments. The Grand Challenges catalyze and expand UVA’s research strengths and expertise to address major societal challenges and opportunities, including the relationship between society and technology.
