Thriving Youth in a Digital Environment and the Society of Digital Mental Health have partnered to create the Digital Health Industry Internship Program, a paid summer internship program that provides graduate students from across the United States with experiential learning opportunities in the field of digital mental health. These opportunities will enrich the field by exposing students to the industry world and expanding the range of expertise available to our industry partners.

What type of students apply?

The students from our pilot year in 2025 came from graduate programs across the country and bring diverse expertise to digital health challenges. Most applicants come from psychology and public health backgrounds, but we also attract students from computer science, psychiatry, data science, engineering, social work, epidemiology, and information science programs.

This mix means you can find students with clinical research expertise, technical skills, implementation science knowledge, or a combination—whatever your project needs. We will help design an application that helps you access applicants with the most relevant skill sets.

What is the process of hiring an intern?

1. Express interest: Fill out our internship interest form to start the conversation.

2. Submit your position: Once we confirm the program is a good fit for your needs, you’ll complete an application describing the role, responsibilities, required skills, and your mentorship plan.

3. Review qualified candidates: We screen applications and forward matches for your review.

4. Interview and hire: You interview finalists, extend an offer, and onboard through your company’s HR process.

What are interns able to do?

Our interns take on substantive projects that move your business forward. Recent examples include:

Validating clinical products through qualitative research on accuracy and quality

Analyzing user data to understand caregiver mental health patterns and long-term impacts

Building measurement frameworks to track youth mental health outcomes

Conducting needs assessments of clinician competencies and capacity

Delivering market research that shaped product development decisions

One mentor said: “This was a great opportunity to not only resource a project that otherwise would not have been resourced, but also to mentor a bright and talented trainee…Our team was able to accomplish work that otherwise would not have been possible with our current resourcing and elevate the impact of our team at the company.”

How much does it cost?

Internships run up to twelve weeks between June and August 2026. You design the scope based on your needs—anywhere from 5 to 30 hours per week, and positions can run just a few weeks or all twelve.

Compensation: We recommend approximately $30/hour. You can structure this as hourly pay or a fixed stipend for the summer. Depending on hours, total costs typically range from $1,800 (5 hours/week) to $10,800 (30 hours/week).

To put that in perspective: you get 60-360 hours of specialized graduate-level work for a fraction of what you’d pay a full-time hire. As one mentor put it: “We feel like we got a great bang for our buck out of this process.”

What's the timeline?

Submit your position anytime between now and March 2026. We accept internship positions on a rolling basis, so the earlier you submit, the sooner your position is visible to talented candidates.

Your position goes live on our website for 4 weeks and gets promoted through our newsletter and social media
Students apply directly for your specific role
After the 4-week posting period, we screen applications and send you qualified candidates
You interview, select your intern, and work together to finalize the schedule within the June-August 2026 timeframe
