UPDATE: Applications remain open for high school students. However, due to an overwhelming response, applications for university students (as of February 4) are now waitlisted.
There’s a lot of discussion about the effects of social media on teens’ mental health, but rarely do we actually ask teens and young adults what they want and need so they can use social media in good ways.
We want to help teens and young adults figure out solutions that will work for them.
During this event, high school and university students will work in teams to brainstorm ideas for programs to support teen’s mental health when using social media. You will help design a program (e.g., design a new app) that can be used to help teens make positive social connections and feel good on social media, instead of feeling like they’re missing out or not as good as others. No previous experience is required, and there will be no coding.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
Build Your Resume
The TYDE Hackathon provides participants unique opportunities to learn marketable skills like building an effective pitch, clinical product development, and enriched knowledge about digital mental health research. All participants will receive a completion certificate that’s an excellent resume builder. No prior experience needed.
Network with Peers and Professionals
The event will include a mix of high school students, undergraduate, and graduate students with shared interests in psychology and mental health on social media. It’s a great opportunity to create connections with like-minded people.
Design Your Own Mental Health Intervention
The goal of this event is to brainstorm ideas for programs that support teen mental health as they navigate social media. In the process, you will gain knowledge about mental health research and app design, work with a team to apply that knowledge in creative ways, and learn how to present your ideas in an engaging manner.
Cash Prizes and Free Food
The TYDE Hackathon is completely free to enter, and all participants receive a $50 prize for completing the full event. Snacks, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided at no cost to you!
