Irène P. Mathieu, MD, MPH, FAAP (she/her/hers) serves on the TYDE Seed Grants Committee.
She is a healer and artist – an academic pediatrician, writer, educator, and public health researcher. She is the award-winning author of four poetry collections – milk tongue (Deep Vellum Press, 2023), Grand Marronage (Switchback Books, 2019), orogeny (Trembling Pillow Press, 2017), and the galaxy of origins (dancing girl press, 2014).
Irène is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, where she practices and teaches outpatient pediatrics and runs community-engaged research projects as the founder and principal investigator of the Wellness And Youth Social action (WAYS) Lab. She also serves as Assistant Director of Programs in Health Humanities in the School of Medicine. In this capacity, she created and runs the Health Equity & Justice Fellowship, teaches courses in literature and medicine at the undergraduate and medical student levels, and gives lectures around the country on using literature as a tool for health equity education.
Her writing and advocacy work have been featured in the Washington Post, LA Times, Richmond Magazine, NPR, and more. Irène is a speaker with Centivox and is represented by Patricia Nelson of Looking Glass Literary & Media. She lives with her family in Charlottesville, Virginia.
