CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Some Virginia adolescents will soon have to say goodbye to scrolling endlessly on social media.
Governor Glenn Youngkin has signed a new law that requires social media companies to limit users under the age of 16 to one hour per day. Parents do have the ability to adjust those time frames.
The time limit is only imposed on certain social media apps, including Instagram and Tik Tok, but does not affect different services like direct messaging.
“I [really] appreciate that they’re thoughtful about the kinds of technology and apps that they’re limiting,” said Nancy Deutsch, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs with UVA’s School of Education and Human Development. “Teens today use all sorts of different apps for communication and as ways to connect to each other, and the goal of this seems not to limit that, but to limit the kinds of more specific social media use.”
